Vollhardt was born in Madrid, raised in Buenos Aires and Munich, studied at the University of Munich, got his Ph.D. with Professor Peter Garratt at the University College, London, and was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Bob Bergman (then) at the California Institute of Technology. He moved to Berkeley in 1974 when he began his efforts toward the development of organocobalt reagents in organic synthesis, the preparation of theoretically interesting hydrocarbons, the assembly of novel transition metal arrays with potential in catalysis, and the discovery of a parking space. Among other pleasant experiences, he was a Studienstiftler, Adolf Windaus medalist, Humboldt Senior Scientist, ACS Organometallic Awardee, Otto Bayer Prize Awardee, A. C. Cope Scholar, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize Holder, and recipient of the Medal of the University Aix-Marseille and an Honorary Doctorate from The University of Rome Tor Vergata. He is the current Chief Editor of Synlett. Among his more than 350 publications, he treasures especially this textbook in organic chemistry, translated into 13 languages. Peter is married to Marie-Jos Sat, a French artist, and they have two children, Paloma (b. 1994) and Julien (b. 1997).Neil E. Schore was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1948 and educated in public schoolsin the Bronx, New York, and Ridgefield, New Jersey. He completed a B.A. with honors in chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. Moving back to New York, he worked with the late Professor Nicholas J. Turro at Columbia University, studying photochemical and photophysical processes of organic compounds for his Ph.D. thesis. He first met co-author Peter Vollhardt in the 1970s when they both were doing postdoctoral work in Professor Robert Bergman's laboratory at Cal Tech. Since joining the UC-Davis faculty in 1976, Schore has taught organic chemistry to more than 15,000 nonchemistry majors, winning seven teaching awards, publishing over 100 papers in various areas related to organic chemistry, and refereeing several hundred local youth soccer games. Neil is married to Carrie Erickson, a microbiologist at the UC-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. They have two children, Michael (b. 1981) and Stefanie (b. 1983), both of whom carried out experiments for the new Seventh Edition of Organic Chemistry."

I like the book itself, but I would like to warn that the kindle edition is horrendous. The Kindle version is almost impossible to read, the formatting is dreadful as fond sizes are all over the place and tables or drawings are often scrambled. Is it really so hard to provide something that is anywhere near pdf quality?Amazon should be ashamed of their kindle format. If they can't produce a decent electronic version, they should not sell it. I just threw 60 out of the window.Unfortunately, I have quite a few kindle versions of textbooks that are like that. Pity. Stay away from any kindle book that seems good value compared to the hardcover.
Hard concept, hard book to read. Its worth having to try and get a hold on the material, because guaranteed your professor will breed through their notes like you are a organic chemist of 10 years
After one term of having this book, I decided to becomea chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realizethe complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.) If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use. If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, itdoesn't just string you along and give you the basics...it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what isactually happening in each reaction. Product yields formany reactions are included, and this is quite useful. The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy"(they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone",for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".) I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets. True, the problems in each chapter are not always good. If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's. But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity.
I'm using it to study by myself over the summer and it is very helpful. The wording is very clear and lets you think mechanistically. The info boxes are interesting. Get this edition if you can because it is so much cheaper.
I bought this book for a college Organic Chemistry Course... Well written and easy to understand, it helped explain Organic Chemistry theory.
This book came to us so damaged. See the pics.
Got book and the binding is coming apart
To all you Organic Chemistry majors...this book is surprisingly good...It really teaches you how to understand the basics of ochem...but as the book progressed, it got confusing. Unfortunately, the solutions do not come with the book. You need to purchase a separate manual with this book.
